“Looking For a Quality Personal Trainer, Small Group Trainer & Admin Assistant.

If You Have a Positive Attitude & A Genuine Desire To Learn, Then This Position Could Be Just For You!”

Dear Prospective Personal Trainer,

First of all, thanks for taking the time to visit this site.  It’s my hope that you have precisely what I need so I can take this page down immediately and put you to work in this fun and rewarding position I have available.

You should have arrived here because you saw my employment ad that reads like this:

Personal Trainer, Group Trainer & admin assistant wanted, $25+/hr, excellent attitude, people person, growth/bonus opportunities.

So let me tell you about me, the studio/gym, and the personal training position available.

My name is Ben Longley and I run a personal training gym called The Fit Stop, in St Kilda East, Melbourne.

My business is dedicated to helping women and men achieve their health, fitness and fat loss goals through both 1-on-1 and small group personal training sessions, using a range of strength & conditioning principles and methods. We also coach our clients through the nutrition side of things.

I'm looking for an enthusiastic, motivated, and energetic person for the following:

  • To train private clients in a 1-on-1 and 2-on-1 setting.

  • Small Group Training – between 3-6 people

  • Larger group training classes. Class themes may range from ‘metabolic fat loss’ classes to movement / mobility classes. Appropriate training will be given.

  •  General admin work / maintenance duties.

If you are hired for this personal training position, you'll begin with most of your time spent 'shadowing' or sitting in on sessions with myself and our other trainers to learn our way of training and coaching, as well as getting to know our client base. This shadowing time will be UNPAID for an initial 4 weeks on the assumption that you're someone who understands and appreciates the opportunity to learn and get used to our gym environment. You'll also begin coaching clients in the studio as the opportunity's present themselves (any time spent training clients will be paid hours) and as new clients join we will fill up your schedule.

If you play your part, it won’t take long to get you busy, and by 6 months we'll aim to have you training clients at least 30 hours per week. You will be paid as an independent contractor initially, and have the opportunity for a pay rise after a 90-day trial period. My studio offers a casual, fun environment, lots of space, all the equipment needed and the opportunity to learn a great deal about training and nutrition which will be an ongoing requirement.

I’m also very fair, respectful and appreciative. You will be compensated fairly, treated fairly and I will certainly look for ways to pay you more for your efforts if they warrant it.

I want someone who believes in working hard if they want to be successful, someone willing to go above and beyond what is expected of them to add value to the business and themselves, someone who understands that short term sacrifices will lead to long term gains. It is important that you enjoy working with people, you have a sense of humour and have a genuine interest in making a difference in the lives of others.

Tasks You’ll Expected To Perform

  • Design Strength & Conditioning Programs For Clients: You'll receive coaching and training on our way of doing things.

  • Perform Client assessments and evaluate movement patterns to screen for dysfunctions and muscle imbalances. Training will be provided.

  • Tracking Client Progress: In order to ensure a client's success, you'll need to track weekly progress, current successes and challenges, review client nutrition diary's etc.  It will be your job to hold a client accountable to his/her health and fitness program to ensure the best results possible.

  • Perform Movement Assessments:  Ideally, you'll have some movement assessment skills and have a basic grasp of good training technique, anatomy and biomechanics, corrective exercise etc.

  • Coach clients through their program: You'll need to coach, instruct and motivate clients in both 1-on-1 and small group personal training sessions (maximum 6 people).

  • Demonstrate Proper Exercise Instruction:  This is a big one. I need you to be able to provide proper coaching, instruction, and motivation during a clients training session.  You should have a working knowledge of the human body (i.e. muscles, movements, functions, etc) and be able to provide appropriate exercises for client’s goals, and be able to adjust/modify programs accordingly, on a whim if needed.

  • Provide Ongoing Health and Fitness Education: Our clients rely on us to service all of their health and fitness needs.  It is your job as a fitness coach to provide your clients with health and fitness education on various topics that will empower them to lead healthy lives forever.  You'll be provided with educational tools and resources, will be expected to study them and speak about them with your clients.

  • Various admin / 'behind the scenes' tasks such as:
    - Organizing marketing & promotions material, printing, delivery etc.
    - Filing forms, client data entry.
    - Facebook posting
    - Gym maintenance

Required Skills

Obviously you need the required Cert 3 & 4 from a nationally recognised institution, and your First Aid certification

However here are the main skills you must already have in order to qualify for this position:

  • Good Communication Skills: Talking with clients is something you have to do every day.  You must be comfortable conversing in-person and on the phone and know how to conduct yourself professionally, and deliver clear instructions to the clients.  I’ll teach you everything you need to do during a training session, but I can’t teach you manners and professionalism.

  • People skills and personality: Must love working with people! As mentioned above you must be very comfortable working with people and be able to show your clients energy and enthusiasm while working with them. A good sense of humour also goes a long way.

  • Health and Fitness Education:  You do not need personal training experience, but you should have a working knowledge of health and fitness and an attitude of 'constant learning'.

Bonus Skills

If you have these additional skills, your resume will go right to the top of the stack (but if you don’t have these skills, you should still apply because these are not mandatory).

  • Previous personal training experience (gym, PT studio, Outdoor, in-home trainer, etc.)

  • Nutrition knowledge / formal education

  • Exercise science / health science Degree

  • Functional Movement Screen certified (or similar)
